In December of 2017, the GECO club was founded by a few Warrior Jiu-Jitsu martial arts parents who had been talking about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) training for their daughters. The outcome of the discussion was to create their own all-girls STEM programming club. The goal was to introduce the girls to STEM and hopefully keep them interested in engineering fields until they got to college. They also wanted to create a close sisterhood of girls that are eager to learn and teach each other more about the technical sciences. The original group of girls then decided that their club needed a name and they voted in: Girls Engineering & Coding Organization (GECO).
Mentors not only teach but strive to inspire! They teach from their experiences in cyber security, programming, electronics, and even the occasional Dungeons and Dragons game. However, mentor’s don’t always come based solely on their technical skills. Sometimes all it takes is passion and the desire to be a role model for our youth. We appreciate all of our past, present, and future mentors! If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please reach out. For the protection of our club members, we will require a background check to be completed. This takes about 10 minutes and can be fulfilled at a local sheriff’s office.
